Wonder Boy by Knightreaver Wonder Boy by Knightreaver
Wonder Boy

Publisher Quality Comics

First appearance National Comics #1 (1940)

Created by Jerry Maxwell

First appeared in National Comics #1 (July 1940): "The Boy From the Meteor". No apparent relation to DC Comics's popular Wonder Woman, the character lapsed into public domain prior to D.C.'s purchase of Quality Comics.

Wonder Boy last appeared under Quality Comics banner in National Comics #26 (November): "...The long bloody hands of America’s enemies..." The character reappeared two years later in Elliot Publishing Co's Bomber Comics (along with several other characters that originally appeared in National Comics). The circumstances behind the move are unclear. In 1955, he was one of the characters to be used by Ajex-Farrell Comics in Terrific Comics #16 and Wonder Boy #17 and 18. The character has not reappeared outside reprints since.

The addition of the belt is a nice touch. It keeps Wonder Boy's shirt from looking like an oversized nightshirt. The hairstyle seems a little modern, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Could of sworn his original costume had a belt.

I checked the fiche scans of some of the early issues of National Comics and it seems that Wonder Boy's costume originally had something that the penciler may have intended to be a belt, but the colorist colored right over it. Fiche makes things a bit blurry, so it's hard to say for sure. In later issues, though, there is clearly no belt.
